2 Kings 14:24
And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin. And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD: he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin.
Jeroboam II is identified as one who did evil in the sight of the Lord and did not depart from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin. His reign belongs to the continuing story of transgression among Israel's kings. That account of Israel's kings is a sad story of departure from God, in which idolatry led the people astray. It was a period in which the ten tribes faced foreign domination that ultimately led to the overthrow and captivity of the kingdom. The northern kingdom's history in this period, including its continued departure from the Lord under the sins associated with Jeroboam, is recorded in 2 Kings 14:23-28.
Jonah's prophetic ministry falls in the reign of Jeroboam II. Assyrian records corroborate the biblical account of this history of the northern kingdom of Israel. Syria's defeat by Assyria left Israel free to expand and become strong.
