2 Kings 14:8
Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face. Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look one another in the face.
The challenge from Amaziah to Jehoash belongs to the history of Amaziah's reign in Judah, which carries forward the ongoing story of the kings of Israel and Judah. That reign started in faithfulness and closed in wickedness. Among the kings of Judah he stands above the average, yet not in the rank of those who were truly good. Beyond the bare challenge to meet face to face, no further explanation of his message to Jehoash is given.
The challenge opens the episode in which the thistle seeks a marriage alliance with the cedar. The thistle's address is personification, clothing a lifeless thing with the form and feelings and speech of a rational being. In this the Spirit of God is seen to personify every sort of inanimate thing, laying down the rule by which the dead in hades are presented as speaking and acting as if alive in keeping with the facts of their cases, as in the parable of the rich man and Lazarus.
