In the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign.
Azariah son of Amaziah began to reign as king of Judah, and he is also called Uzziah. His reign in Judah lasted 52 years.
His reign belongs to a nearly 300-year period running in Israel from Joram through Jehu and his dynasty of Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, Zachariah and Shallum, then through the short troubled reigns of Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah and Hoshea. During that course Shalmaneser of Assyria invaded and Sargon his successor completed the conquest, and the tribes were carried away into captivity and scattered. In Judah the same period runs from Ahaziah and the wicked Athaliah through Joash, Amaziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah and Jehoahaz.
It was a time when Elisha finished about sixty years of ministry and died under Jehoash. Hosea, Jonah and Amos were prophets in connection with Israel, and Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah and Nahum were prophets in connection with Judah. The verse stands in Judah's spotted record in which the kingdom always prospered under righteous faithful rulers, yet turning from God to grossest idolatry after such prosperity brought calamity upon rulers and people.
