This was the fulfillment of the Lord's promise to Jehu that his sons would rule Israel through the fourth generation. What had been declared beforehand came to pass exactly as the Lord had spoken. Jehu began a new dynasty in Israel that continued through Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, and Zachariah. That line was brought to an end by Shallum.
This succession belongs to the continuing kingship of the ten tribes. It unfolded during a period marked by transgression and conflict. It stood within the course that led at last to subjection to foreign powers.
