Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah, and he reigned a full month. In the succession of the kings of Israel he followed Zachariah and was followed by Menahem. His accession brought the dynasty of Jehu to its end.
His brief rule belonged to the continuing succession of Israelite kings in a time of transgression, war, strife, and defeat. The history of Israel in this period was one of departure from God and idolatry. Had the kingdom obeyed the commandments of the Lord it might have stood strong and stable, but unfaithfulness turned it aside from that course.
