2 Kings 15:14

For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, and came to Samaria, and smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, and slew him, and reigned in his stead.

Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah to Samaria, smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria, slew him, and reigned in his stead. It marks the close of Shallum's brief one-month reign and the accession of Menahem in the succession of Israel's kings. That change ended the dynasty of Jehu and began Menahem's reign in his place.

Menahem's reign was short and troubled, one of the last reigns of the kingdom of Israel before Pekahiah, Pekah, and Hoshea. Those last reigns led to the end of the kingdom, when Shalmaneser of Assyria invaded, Sargon his successor completed the conquest, and the tribes were carried away into captivity and scattered. The verse belongs to Israel's succession of kings and to the kingdom's sad history of departure from God.
