2 Kings 15:2
Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem. Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem.
The king named here is Azariah, also called Uzziah, a king of Judah. His reign belongs to the history recorded in 2 Kings 7-23, which covers a period of nearly three hundred years. In the succession of Judah he comes after Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash and Amaziah, and before Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah and Jehoahaz.
During the same era the kingdom of Israel ran from Joram through Jehu and his dynasty to its end under Hoshea, when Assyria under Shalmaneser and Sargon brought it to an end. Prophets active in Judah during this era included Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah and Nahum, while Elisha, Hosea, Jonah and Amos served during Israel's time. This history shows a repeated pattern in which Judah always prospered under righteous and faithful rulers, but brought calamity on itself and its people when rulers turned from God to gross idolatry.
