2 Kings 15:22

And Menahem slept with his fathers; and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead.

The verse marks a father-to-son succession on the throne of the northern kingdom of Israel, Menahem giving place to his son Pekahiah. Their reigns were short and troubled, Menahem reigning ten years and Pekahiah reigning two years. During Menahem's reign Israel was made tributary to Assyria.

This succession came after the dynasty of Jehu, which ran through Jehu, Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II and Zachariah and ended with Shallum, and before the reigns of Pekah and Hoshea. It belongs to Israel's course of turning from God that ended in captivity under the Assyrians. Under Pekah and Hoshea the kingdom came to an end by the invasion of Shalmaneser completed by his successor Sargon, when the tribes were carried away into captivity and scattered.

It belongs to the history in 2 Kings 7 to 23 covering nearly 300 years. During that history Elisha ministered about sixty years until his death under Jehoash, and Hosea, Jonah and Amos were active. At the same time in Judah occurred the reigns of Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah or Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah and Jehoahaz, while Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah and Nahum prophesied. In that period Judah prospered under righteous faithful rulers and fell into calamity when rulers turned from God to gross idolatry.
