Pekahiah the son of Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah, and reigned two years. Azariah king of Judah is also called Uzziah. In the succession of Israel's rulers he followed Menahem and came before Pekah and Hoshea, after the dynasty of Jehu had ended with Zachariah and Shallum.
His was one of the short and troubled reigns, a brief reign amid continuing conflict and subjection to foreign powers, for Menahem had made Israel tributary to Assyria. His reign falls within Israel's continuing departure from God and idolatry. It belongs to the final decline of the northern kingdom toward its end by the invasion of Shalmaneser of Assyria, completed by Sargon his successor, with the tribes carried away into captivity and scattered. His time falls within a period of nearly three hundred years when the prophets Hosea, Jonah, and Amos were active.
