2 Kings 15:7
So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead. So Azariah slept with his fathers; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Jotham his son reigned in his stead.
Azariah is also called Uzziah. The verse records that Azariah died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David, and that his son Jotham reigned in his place. Azariah reigned for 52 years, and Jotham followed him as king for 16 years. Jotham is described as good.
The verse belongs in the nearly 300-year period when the kings of Judah from Ahaziah, Athaliah, Joash, Amaziah, Azariah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah and Jehoahaz ruled at the same time as the kings of Israel from Joram through Jehu, Jehoahaz, Jehoash, Jeroboam II, Zachariah, Shallum, Menahem, Pekahiah, Pekah and Hoshea. That period ended when Shalmaneser of Assyria invaded and Sargon completed the conquest and the tribes were carried away into captivity and scattered.
During that same time Elisha ministered about sixty years until his death under Jehoash in 796 B.C., with the prophets Hosea, Jonah and Amos active. In Judah the prophets Joel, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, Zephaniah and Nahum were active during that same time. The verse is part of Judah's spotted record in which the kingdom always prospered under righteous, faithful rulers, yet rulers repeatedly turned from God to gross idolatry, bringing calamity upon themselves and their people.
