2 Kings 17:34

Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;

The verse describes the origin and lasting condition of the Samaritans, who had once belonged to Israel but were separated through neglecting obedience to God's statutes and through sin, so that an idolatrous nation was allowed to conquer and overcome them. Assyrian colonists then intermarried with the remnant of the ten tribes left in Samaria and Galilee to form a mixed people, and their religion was gradually contaminated and corrupted by that union. To do after the former manners unto this day is to continue in those former religious practices without truly fearing the Lord. It is to fail to follow after His statutes and ordinances and the law and commandment He commanded the children of Jacob, whom He named Israel.

Their worship afterward came to follow the ceremonies given through Moses and grew more like Jewish worship, yet it remained a mixture of Judaism and heathenism. They still clung to idolatry to a certain degree and did not fully turn from their former ways or fully keep God's law, even while claiming to be God's people and to worship the true God. While still keeping reverence for the true God, they represented Him by images of wood and stone before which they bowed. They treated idols as reminders of the living God, yet in heart and practice they remained idolaters, led to revere graven images.

Continuing in former ways while claiming to belong to God dishonors Him and shows the need for conversion and repentance. Without that change the heart hardens and keeps choosing what is contrary to truth and righteousness.
