2 Kings 17:8
And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made.
The verse belongs to the Assyrian capture of Samaria and the scattering of the shattered remnant of the ten tribes among the nations, which took place during the earlier part of Hezekiah's reign. Israel walked in the religious and idolatrous statutes, principles and practices of the heathen nations whom the Lord had cast out from before them. Israel also walked in the statutes and practices which the kings of Israel had made and established. In doing so Israel sinned against God, turned from Him, and rejected His commandments and ways for human ways.
This rejection began Israel's downfall and led to national apostasy and ruin. By choosing and following the practices of the nations, Israel became prey to those nations and subject to them. Their rebellion brought God's judgment in being handed over to enemies who plundered their land and took them captive. Assyria's success in this judgment led many to question the power of the God of the Hebrews.
