Elisha Sees Elijah Taken Up in the Chariotby emmanuel_higgins

2 Kings 2:13

He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;

After Elijah was taken up, Elisha picked up his fallen mantle, went back, and stood on the bank of the Jordan. In taking it up he stepped into Elijah's place, receiving the transfer of his prophetic responsibility and ministry, and the fallen mantle assured him that his request for a double portion of Elijah's spirit was granted. Standing there he called on the God of Elijah to prove that the Lord would work through him as He had worked through Elijah, and the sign that followed showed that Elijah's spirit rested on him. That double portion joined Elijah's power with gentleness, mercy, and tender compassion, for lamb-like kindness was needed more than severity. So experienced ministers are to give younger workers opportunity to learn as Elijah taught Elisha, educating them to take up the mantle and carry the work forward in a life shaped by Christ's Spirit.

Elisha Succeeds Elijah

After Elijah was taken up, Elisha picked up Elijah's fallen mantle, went back, and stood by the bank of the Jordan. Elijah and Elisha served in a time of widespread wickedness and idolatry, with Elijah chosen by God as a preacher of righteousness, guided by the Holy Spirit to carry messages of warning and do God's work. Before this moment Elisha had left a life of wealth and comfort to follow Elijah, willingly performing humble service and relying on God through trials, which proved he had character fit to endure testing and take on responsibility.

Taking up the fallen mantle marked Elisha's succession to Elijah's place and the transfer of prophetic responsibility and ministry to him. The falling of the mantle confirmed to Elisha that his request for a double portion of Elijah's spirit had been granted. Standing by the Jordan, Elisha called on the God of Elijah and tested whether the Lord would work through him as He had worked through Elijah. The sign at the Jordan that followed showed that Elijah's spirit rested on Elisha, a fact recognized by the prophets, and Elisha proved faithful in his new responsibility.

Elisha received a double portion of the spirit that had rested on Elijah, joining Elijah's power with gentleness, mercy, and tender compassion. In this succession, Elisha's lamb-like kindness was needed more than Elijah's severity.

Training Younger Workers

Elijah gave Elisha opportunity to learn how to teach the truth, and the taking up of the fallen mantle belongs to that training relationship. Experienced ministers are to follow Elijah's example by giving the same kind of instruction to the young workers who follow them, teaching younger workers how to share the truth and carry the light to many places. Elisha's taking up of Elijah's mantle as he continued the work reflects the educating of younger workers to carry the responsibilities of God's cause in succession.

Elisha took up Elijah's fallen mantle as he continued his prophetic work, having received a double portion of the spirit that had rested on Elijah. In him Elijah's power was joined with gentleness, mercy, and the tender compassion of Christ's Spirit. The mantle of Christ is shown by a life shaped by Christ's Spirit and fixed on the Saviour.
