Manasseh Raises an Asherah Pole in the Temple Courtby emmanuel_higgins

2 Kings 21:5

And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

Manasseh dared to deliberately set aside the statutes recorded by Moses, and building altars for the host of heaven was part of that rebellion, especially against the statutes in the book of the covenant in Deuteronomy. Obedience to those same statutes had made the reign of his father Hezekiah prosperous, in direct contrast to the course Manasseh pursued. During Manasseh's reign the temple copy of the book of the law was lost through careless neglect, so that for many years the people generally were deprived of its instruction.
