2 Kings 21:6

And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Under Hezekiah the kingdom had prospered because the statutes in the book of the covenant in Deuteronomy were observed. Teaching priests carried out a daily public reading of the book of the law, so its instruction continually guided the reign. Manasseh dared to set aside the statutes recorded by Moses, in direct defiance of that former order. His course especially cast off what was contained in the book of the covenant in Deuteronomy. During his reign the temple copy of the book of the law was lost through careless neglect, leaving the people generally deprived of its instruction for many years.
