In Josiah's eighteenth year Shaphan was directed to go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he might sum the silver brought into the house of the Lord, which the keepers of the door had gathered of the people. The counting was to prepare the collected silver to be given to the workers engaged in repairing the temple. That use included mending its damaged and broken places and obtaining timber and hewn stone for the work. These repairs form the setting for Hilkiah's unexpected finding in the temple of a portion of Scripture that had been misplaced and lost for many years. The manuscript thus discovered helped bring about Josiah's reformation.
