2 Kings 23:4
And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el.
The cleansing described here did not stand alone but followed a deliberate proposal that those highest in authority should unite in solemn covenant before the Lord to cooperate together in bringing about a reformation. That covenant commitment was the foundation for the decisive action that followed, linking leadership unity with practical purification. Immediately before the command was given, the king took his stand by a pillar and entered into covenant to walk after the Lord. In that covenant he pledged to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all heart and with all soul, in harmony with the words written in the book, and all the people stood to the covenant with him.
What followed was the resulting work of cleansing, carried out under royal command. The king directed Hilkiah the high priest, together with the priests of the second order and the keepers of the door, to bring out of the temple of the Lord everything that had been made for Baal and for the grove and for the host of heaven. Those idolatrous vessels were removed from the sacred house and then burned outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron. Their ashes were carried away to Bethel, completing the removal of defilement from the temple precincts.
