Elderly Man and Woman Mourn Among Jerusalem Ruinsby emmanuel_higgins

2 Kings 25:10

And all the army of the Chaldees, that were with the captain of the guard, brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about.

The breaking down of the walls all around Jerusalem was carried out by the whole Chaldean army that accompanied the captain of the guard, marking the overthrow of the city in its destruction. That destruction and the carrying away of the people into exile came as a consequence of their failure to act as God's missionaries to the nations. Instead of fulfilling that purpose they had shut themselves away and separated themselves from the peoples around them.

In scattering them abroad God purposed that the knowledge of His truth might be carried to the world that otherwise would not have received it. The exile was therefore not abandonment but a means of spreading light through a dispersed people. If in that condition they proved loyal and true and submissive, God would restore them and bring them back again to their own land.
