2 Kings 3:10

And the king of Israel said, Alas! that the LORD hath called these three kings together, to deliver them into the hand of Moab!

The cry is despair in a helpless military crisis, with the king of Israel concluding that the three allied kings have been brought together only to be delivered into the hand of Moab for defeat and ruin before an apparent impossibility. The whole third chapter of 2 Kings is a test of faith, giving the pattern of testing and temptation that those who work for God will meet again in a similar manner. No human strength can meet such an emergency, so deliverance requires trusting not in what people can do for themselves but in what God can do for them and through them.

God has ways and means for every emergency and works in ways least expected. Faith and patience must therefore go forward without limiting the Holy One, whose power is of old and whose ways are past finding out, by marking out in advance how God must work. Those who trust in this way will certainly realize His power in their work. The battle against the enemy is turned not by human strength but by the strength of the mighty General of armies working for the glory of His own name.
