2 Kings 4:26

Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say unto her, Is it well with thee? is it well with thy husband? is it well with the child? And she answered, It is well.

Elisha dispatched Gehazi to meet the Shunammite woman as she approached and to inquire after the welfare of herself, her husband, and her child. Her son had died and she was in distress, yet she replied that it was well. She withheld the cause of her grief from the servant and made it known only when she came into Elisha's presence.

The inquiry whether it is well bears upon the condition of the soul and summons each person to sober self-examination as to whether all is spiritually well. The reply that it is well voices settled confidence that the soul is well even while distressing emotions remain unchanged. Such assurance stands because faith is grounded in God's Word rather than in fluctuating feeling.
