Elisha and His Servant at Dothan in Three ScenesBible World

2 Kings 6:14

Therefore sent he thither horses, and chariots, and a great host: and they came by night, and compassed the city about.

The king of Syria sent horses and chariots and a great host by night to surround Dothan, the city where Elisha was staying. The force was sent to seize and apprehend Elisha, because his warnings exposing the king's secret ambush against Israel had repeatedly thwarted the king's plans and defeated his armies. Though visibly surrounded, Elisha was protected by heavenly forces unknown to the Syrians, for the hills were filled with God's armies of horses and chariots of fire.

God delivered His servant from that hostile force, revealing Himself in difficulty and trial as an ever-present Helper and confirming Elisha as true to principle and to God with divine credentials. The surrounding army did not leave Elisha unprotected, for the unseen armies show that angels guard God's faithful people amid visible and unseen dangers. This deliverance stands with Elisha's other miracles as a lesson for admonition upon those on whom the ends of the world are come.
