Elisha Leads the Blinded Syrians to Samariaby KalebRosendahl

2 Kings 6:19

And Elisha said unto them, This is not the way, neither is this the city: follow me, and I will bring you to the man whom ye seek. But he led them to Samaria.

The verse belongs to the account in 2 Kings 6:15-23 of Elisha and the Syrian army, set forth as instruction on dependence on God when His people are brought into strait places with apparently no escape. Behind it lies the sending of an armed host by the king of Syria to seize Elisha, because Elisha had frustrated Syrian plans by revealing the ambush laid against Israel. Elisha addressed the blinded Syrian soldiers to tell them this was not the way nor the city of the man they sought, promised to bring them to the man they sought, and led them to Samaria. By that leading he brought the enemy soldiers into Israel's capital instead of attacking them.

When their sight was restored they found themselves in the midst of Samaria, where the king of Israel fed them and sent them home rather than killing them. The verse shows Elisha true to principle and true to God, his work bearing the divine credentials, and shows God revealing Himself in difficulty and trial as an ever-present Helper. The account therefore teaches dependence on God when His people are brought into strait places with apparently no escape. Its deliverance stands as a lesson of admonition for those upon whom the ends of the world are come.
