2 Kings 6:23

And he prepared great provision for them: and when they had eaten and drunk, he sent them away, and they went to their master. So the bands of Syria came no more into the land of Israel.

The king of Syria prepared an ambush against Israel, but Elisha exposed the plan and thwarted the armies, and when an armed force was later sent to seize Elisha, God delivered him. The verse closes the episode in which Elisha and his servant were surrounded by the Syrians. Elisha forbade the king of Israel to kill the Syrian soldiers who had been brought blind into Samaria, reasoning that they were not captives he had taken in battle with sword and bow, and directed him to set bread and water, food and drink, before them and then release them to their master. The king obeyed by preparing abundant provision for them, giving them a great meal and sending them back to their master, treating them with mercy instead of killing them.

After they had eaten and drunk and been sent away, the Syrian raiding bands stopped coming into the land of Israel for a time. Elisha's course shows he was true to principle and true to God, and his work bore heaven's authentication and the divine credentials. In difficulty and trial God revealed Himself to Elisha as an ever-present helper, and the verse teaches dependence on God. This deliverance is a lesson of admonition for those living at the time on whom the ends of the world are come.
