After a period in which Israel had been free from Syrian attacks, Benhadad king of Syria gathered all his host and went up to besiege Samaria in a later Syrian siege under Hazael. That gathering of the whole army for an ascent against the capital marks the opening of this renewed siege. The siege shut the city in until severe famine and desperate suffering prevailed within its walls. That extremity was a visitation of the fathers' sins upon their descendants. The city was then suddenly delivered by God.
