Jehu Proclaimed King Before the PeopleBible World

2 Kings 9:12

And they said, It is false; tell us now. And he said, Thus and thus spake he to me, saying, Thus saith the LORD, I have anointed thee king over Israel.

The verse records the Lord's anointing of Jehu as king over Israel, by which he rose to the throne, killed Joram, and took the kingdom as Ahab's successor. God raised up and anointed Jehu to bring extinction, destruction, and doom upon the house of Ahab, including Jezebel, and to punish its Baal worship. The doom on Ahab's house connected with Jehu's anointing followed Ahab's seizure of Naboth's vineyard, leading to the downfall of Ahab's house and of Jezebel.

Jehu carried out fierce and summary judgment and rooted Baal worship out of Israel. Yet he failed to redeem Israel from false worship because he worshiped himself. After executing that judgment, he continued Jeroboam's separate sin of maintaining images used to represent the true God. The account of Jehu's rise to the throne is confirmed by the record that Jehu succeeded Ahab as king of Israel.
