The conspiracy of Jehu son of Jehoshaphat son of Nimshi against Joram unfolded during the war for Ramoth-gilead, when Joram with all Israel was holding that city against Hazael king of Syria. In the fighting there Joram was wounded and withdrew to Jezreel, leaving Jehu in charge of the royal army in the field. While the army remained at Ramoth-gilead, Jehu was anointed and proclaimed king. He then hastened at once to Jezreel to carry out the appointed judgment upon the house of Ahab.
