2 Kings 9:28
And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David. And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem, and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David.
The verse belongs to the extinction of the house of Ahab, falling within Jehu's fierce and summary judgments upon Baal worship. It stands where Athaliah, the wicked daughter of Ahab, carries the spirit of Jezebel her mother into Judah, just before the beginning of the reign of Joash in Judah under the good priest Jehoiada. The account centers on Jehu's killing of Joram and Jezebel's death as the execution of judgment, and it does not dwell on the burial of Ahaziah carried in a chariot to Jerusalem.
God raised up Jehu to destroy Ahab's house as punishment for Ahab's defiance of the first commandment by replacing Jehovah with Baal. The killing of Joram and the death of Jezebel was the execution of the judgment pronounced against Ahab's house for Naboth's blood and the family's wickedness. That doom was sealed when Jezebel gave Ahab the vineyard of Naboth, a whole transaction of covetousness which is idolatry, showing that ambitious, covetous people overreach their mark and bring doom on themselves even in gaining what they coveted.
Jehu rooted out Baal worship but continued Jeroboam's sin of using images to represent the true God, a violation of the second commandment. He might have redeemed Israel from false worship had he not been a worshiper of himself. His fiery zeal in destroying Joram, the nominal king, and Jezebel, his mother, destroyed enemies and avenged self, which is not Christian principle or Christian work, though it is proper enough in a civil government.
Jehu mounted his chariot, invited the good Jehonadab to ride with him to witness his zeal for the Lord, went forth to destroy thousands more Baal worshipers, and then gave his own devotion to the shrine of the golden calves. The same spirit is in the calls to move against the Turk and to bring him to terms by the navy after America vanquished Spain. America after freeing Cuba and the Philippines from Spanish tyranny risks turning the people over to worshipers of the golden calves, the corporations of graceless greed.
