Jehu's entry through the gate to put Jezebel to death stands within the overthrow of what remained of the house of Ahab. God raised Jehu up to destroy that house and to strike down Jezebel herself. In doing so Jehu was fulfilling a commission given by God to avenge the blood of the Lord's servants and to bring the house of Ahab to its end. Those judgments were compassion for a morally weak Israel, for by removing the enticement of Baal and Ashtoreth worship some were given opportunity to abandon heathenism and seek God.
