2 Peter 1:11

For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

For so makes the richly supplied welcome into Christ's unending kingdom the result of doing what Peter just named, receiving multiplied grace and peace through knowing God and Jesus, receiving all things for life and godliness and the great promises for partaking of the divine nature, adding faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity until they abound, and making calling and election sure so as never to fall. To be ministered unto abundantly is not bare leave to slip inside but a triumphant escorting welcome into the metropolis of the kingdom for overcomers who honored life by well-doing. That kingdom is the eternal kingdom of the Lord and Saviour, the city of God and heavenly courts where the throne of God and of the Lamb stands, the immortal inheritance kept for the redeemed. The welcome is conditional and is given only to those who give all diligence to climb step by step, while God works by multiplication of grace, peace and power and man works by addition of grace upon grace in daily overcoming. It is secured by coming helpless to the cross for cleansing by His blood, laying hold of His imputed righteousness instead of self-righteousness, receiving the wedding garment and allegiance to God's law, and it may be claimed now as present title to eternal life and membership in the royal family.

Words and Setting

The little words for so tie the promise to everything just named before it, making the abundant entrance the outcome of doing those things. It is given to those who have received grace and peace multiplied through the knowledge of God and of Jesus, all things that pertain to life and godliness through divine power and the knowledge of Him who called to glory and virtue, and exceeding great and precious promises by which they become partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption in the world through lust. It is given to those who give all diligence to add to faith virtue, and to virtue knowledge, and to knowledge temperance, and to temperance patience, and to patience godliness, and to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. When these things are in them and abound they are neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of Christ, while he who lacks them is blind and forgetful of cleansing from old sins. Those who do these things make their calling and election sure and shall never fall.

Shall be ministered unto you abundantly means a full and generous welcome, a rich welcome given as positive assurance now. It is not bare permission to pass into the city but a triumphant conducting and escorting into the metropolis of the everlasting kingdom for overcomers who honored life by well-doing. It is a full experience of God's favor and friendship as accepted children, with victory through faith in Christ resting on God's gift of His Son and Christ's sacrifice, and with heaven's light shining into the soul to enable the work of adding grace to grace. Doing these things by words, by actions, by excellent character, and by living in the family as God intends keeps believers from ever falling and brings the sure promise fulfilled as surely as God is God.

The everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is Christ's eternal kingdom, the city of God and the heavenly courts above where the throne of God and of the Lamb is. It is the immortal inheritance and eternal substance, an eternal reward and security in which the faithful are made immortal, see the King in His beauty, dwell with Him, and live a life that continues alongside the life of Jehovah. Its rewards include an unfading crown of glory and a life as enduring as God's, with the tree of life and things God has prepared beyond human sight or imagination. After the thousand years in God's city the earth will be purified, and the city and its inhabitants will be free from corruption. Entrance there is reached by a life of preparation and growth in character, using probationary time and abilities in God's service, progressing in knowledge of God and His ways and works, taking hold of faith in Christ, walking humbly, receiving grace, and overcoming by following Christ who endured temptation without sin.

These words in verses 11-13 were given when Peter was nearing the end of his life, facing imprisonment and suffering for Christ, so that believers would come to a knowledge of the truth. The verse is the culmination of the apostle's ladder of eight rounds and the final reward for those who diligently develop and practice the Christian graces, ascend step by step, and gain the specified victories. It is the overcomer's reward reached through successive development culminating in perfect love for God and love for other people, with safety so that they shall never fall and need not fear a future fall. In so doing sanctification grows by the rule of addition, while spiritual blessings to be enjoyed in this life by the obedient come by the rule of multiplication, and Peter does not teach election to salvation or destruction by fate unalterably fixed before birth.

Conditions for Entrance

The abundant entrance is given to those who give all diligence to add grace to grace until the graces are in them and abound. To faith is to be added virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge temperance, to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity. Those who so add are neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of Christ, for the entrance is the outcome of growth in faith and obedient Christian living, not merely a happy feeling, and it comes through multiplied grace and peace in knowing God and Jesus, through divine power giving all things for life and godliness, and through exceeding great promises by which believers partake of the divine nature and escape corruption through lust, while he who lacks these things is blind and forgetful of cleansing from old sins. This adding is personal work that must not be neglected, for neglect loses the soul, and it is the highest education, making fruitful in knowing Christ.

Those who do these things make their calling and election sure and shall never fall or fail. This is the only election the Bible speaks of, gained by conformity to God's will, by obedience to Christ and His Word, by building character according to the Word, and by a course of action and continuing in the Christian life. It is not fixed by an unconditional decree determining salvation or destruction before birth, nor by profession alone, nor by a peaceful death, nor by a slothful languid claim. Disobedience leaves people unfit for entrance as loyal citizens even if they claim the kingdom, while those who meet the conditions receive provision for spiritual needs, power to overcome, and the glorious hope of steady growth in grace and knowledge of the truth.

The entrance is conditional and requires cooperation with God, offered to all who carry out the conditions. Believers live on the plan of addition by constantly adding the Christian graces and forming characters fit for immortal life, while the Lord works on the plan of multiplication of grace, peace, and gifts of the Spirit, bringing them into closer fellowship with the saints in light. God supplies divine power, promises, probationary time, and all facilities through Christ's merits and sacrifice, gives sanctification as growth in grace and character as the fruit of genuine conversion and faith, and calls for careful study by which people become partakers of the divine nature and overcome worldly corruption. He does nothing without human consent and will not force the water of life, but requires undivided consecration, faith that works by love and purifies the soul, and daily overcoming, with no graduation in the school of Christ.

Coming helpless to the cross, the seeker must lay hold by faith on Christ's righteousness instead of self-righteousness or patching together fragments of merit, which avail nothing. He must receive the wedding garment Christ provides in place of the old citizen's dress, lying low at the foot of the cross to see personal unworthiness and discern the loveliness of Jesus. The sinner convicted by the transgressed law is drawn to Christ on the cross, cleansed by His blood from all sin, clothed by faith with Christ's imputed righteousness, adopted into the royal family as a son of God and joint heir with Christ, and brought back to allegiance to God's holy law through repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ, with practical godliness joining law and gospel as a perfect whole and the heart brought into harmony with God's moral standard. This partaking of the flesh and blood of the crucified Lord, whose words are spirit and life, comes by daily learning of the heavenly Teacher, humbling the heart, following on to know Him whom to know aright is eternal life, living hid with Christ in God, seeking the heavenly country made for us, and allowing nothing to separate from God, with Christ as only hope, helper, strength, sympathizing Friend, Leader, Captain, and divine Teacher sought with the whole family morning and evening in little trials and great perplexities.

An abundant entrance requires fitness through meekness and lowliness of spirit and doing God's will, for life with God is of incomparable worth and receiving what God has prepared depends on it.

Nature of Promised Entrance

The abundant entrance is present assurance of eternal life and title to the immortal inheritance, to be claimed now and enjoyed as privilege rather than as a policy whose value another receives only after death. It gives a life measuring with the life of God, membership in the royal family with heaven as home, and fellowship with the saints in light for those who meet the conditions. It is opened to those who live on the plan of addition, adding grace to grace and cultivating the graces of the Spirit degree after degree and strength after strength until they never fall. It belongs to those in whom faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity are and abound so they are neither barren nor unfruitful in knowing Christ, who partake of the divine nature, live virtue hid with Christ in God, seek the better heavenly country, and allow nothing to separate them from God. It is a life-insurance policy available to everyone, secured now in the heavenly courts by diligence, proved efficacious through endless eternity, and realized in the day of the Lord when the books are opened.

As Jesus overcame and ascended in triumph to the Father's throne, overcomers will sit with the Son as He sat with the Father, and will be escorted thither with triumph while Jesus welcomes them to inherit the prepared kingdom. They enter through the pearly gates into the city of God, welcomed into their Lord's joy with the right to eat from the tree of life. Those who climb the ladder round after round step off finally into the kingdom, reaching the destination after being drawn, forgiven, and kept unspotted from the world. This welcome comes to those who diligently make calling and election sure by continuing in faith, pressing steadily forward, removing hindrances to growth, living by faith, and letting the Spirit make them effective in bringing salvation to others. At heaven's entrance they receive the Father's own welcome and Christ's welcome with the immortal crown, their character become like God's through close union with Him and through character perfected by imparted golden oil and Christ's power rather than human strength.

The entrance is marked by everlasting joy and everlasting life through divine grace, the gifts of the Spirit, and God's gift of His Son and Christ's sacrifice. Its rewards include the right to the tree of life with its immortal fruit and healing leaves, the crystal waters and rivers of living water, and all the joys of the kingdom forever. They include an unfading and immortal crown of glory, the spotless robe of Christ's righteousness, and a life as enduring as God's, with things prepared beyond human sight or imagination. They include righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Ghost, sharing heaven's peace and happiness, the joy of the Lord and His well done for unselfish labor and faithfulness in entrusted work. They include seeing the King in His beauty, dwelling with Him, living alongside Jehovah, being led by rivers of living water, praising the Lamb before the throne, and sharing heaven's bliss free from temptation, sorrow, sickness, pain and death in God's city as home, entered not as barely pardoned but as conquerors through victory over sin.

Those who once believed but do not with all diligence add the graces day by day, meet and resist temptation, and grow in usefulness, holiness and fruitfulness are overcome by Satan, become blind and cannot see afar off, forget cleansing from old sins, and forfeit the promise. The entrance is conditional like a life-insurance policy received only by accepting and meeting its conditions, leaving no room for stupidity, indifference, sleepiness, slothful languid profession, or half-hearted and half-converted continuance. No idlers and no retained frailty that could not enjoy the saints' perfection will have place there, for knowing and obeying the laws of the kingdom is necessary lest entrance be put at risk and eternal life be lost. The way from the cross to the crown requires earnest work, struggle against inward sin and outward wrong, doing the Word, feeding on Christ, practicing His words and doing His works, in contrast to living in sin, keeping old objectionable traits, indulging corrupt tendencies, and putting Christ to open shame by a character like Satan. The faithful who give diligence to make calling and election sure, seek the Lord with no time to lose, put away ungodliness and sharp dealing, come out without spot or wrinkle, carry every trial to Jesus, keep the heart in praise as children of God and heirs of heaven, suffer with Christ, stand fast and persevere in well-doing to the end will never fall or fail but will triumph, will not perish or be taken from His hand, and will receive the immortal crown.

Doctrines It Confirms

The verse teaches sanctification as steady growth in grace and knowledge of the truth, the fruit of genuine conversion and faith in the promises by which believers partake of the divine nature and overcome the corruption of the world. It is climbing Peter's ladder of eight rounds step by step from earth to heaven, from the lowest round to the top, by looking to Christ, clinging to Christ, and mounting to His heights. Christ Himself is that ladder connecting earth with heaven, made unto believers wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, sustaining climbers when hands relax and feet tremble. The advance is made by diligently adding the Christian graces until they are in believers and abound, not adding one grace after another in mere sequence but having them all constantly manifest in character, working on the plan of addition while God multiplies grace, so there is no standstill, no graduation, and no completing of the work in a moment. Those who so continue in faith and press steadily forward, forsaking sin and practicing revealed truth in daily life through the progressive sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, make their calling and election sure and shall never fall, receiving as a never-failing assurance of eternal life a character perfected through the imparted golden oil and victory by Christ's power rather than human strength, with right to enter the city and eat from the tree of life.

It confirms obedience as fitness for the kingdom, perfect conformity to God's will lived out by representing God in character and life. Salvation is expected from Christ's giving hand as a broad promise of generous welcome, to be believed with praise and song and thanksgiving, gained as reward through perfect obedience to all God's commandments kept with pleasure and through practical godliness joining law and gospel. The law is the perfect transcript of God's character and foundation of His government given at Sinai, converting the soul and deciding every case, so its principles of righteousness must be put into practice with repeated emphasis, nothing allowed to separate from God, and neglect puts entrance at risk. The Sabbath especially belongs to this path as sign of sanctifying work and pledge of eternal life, the end of the royal path cast up for the ransomed to walk in, so that those who begin to keep it have turned their feet into that path. Light and evidence received must therefore be acted upon with the whole mind and heart in full service, and preaching this chapter calls souls forward for prayer and leads those long on the point of decision to take their stand to keep the Sabbath, making a break and gaining a decided victory.

It confirms salvation wholly through Christ as the only hope and sole dependence. God gave His Son and with Him all the facilities of heaven, that through the merits of a crucified and risen Saviour men may through undivided consecration reach the highest standard of excellence, with no halfway work and no divided service partly in Satan's lines and partly in Christ's succeeding. Christ took human nature to show that men and women can fulfill all righteousness, was tempted in all points as humans are yet not overcome in a single point, endured without sin, died to satisfy the claims of the law without abating one jot, and paid with His precious blood the ransom and price of redemption for every person to give power to become children of God. He is to be come to with little trials and large perplexities, told all things and believed as helper and strength and sympathizing Friend touched with the feeling of infirmities, for in the Lord Jehovah is strength, confessed as Leader, Captain, and divine Teacher by bringing the whole family before God morning and evening in dependence and prayer for guidance. Life on earth is thus preparation for immortal life by conversion, a character shaped by obedience, and faith that works by love and purifies the soul; those who take hold of the divine nature through knowing Him are not left to drift with temptation, yet God does nothing without their consent and will not force any to drink of the water of life. If even the simplest will stand in Christ and determine to become all God intended, the whole being, heart, life, and character molded after the pattern given in Christ, he may become as precious as Daniel, complete in Christ, an heir of God and joint heir with Christ to the immortal inheritance, pledged to serve God alone under the watch of holy angels with the golden oil flowing through the two golden pipes imparted for perfection.

It is set forth as warning, counsel, and encouragement grounded in pure biblical truth and not fables, to be carefully studied and reflected upon, taught in schools and churches, read as uplifting testimony, studied more abundantly and practiced, with its truth impressively forced upon the mind by the way it is presented. Believers are to trust God's promises as they seek a living connection with Christ, know His life and character, and overcome temptation, finding comfort against discouragement and strength to resist. It strikes the keynote of victory for youth and students pursuing education amid contaminating influences and for all seeking increase in knowledge and grace and perfection of character, meaning to make Christ the all in all, to know personal weakness and go to God for strength, to stand nobly against surrounding evil, and not to give the mind almost wholly to study lest all that enriches life is lost. Full admission to the eternal kingdom is given on conditions, doing the things named in the preceding verses and making calling and election sure so as never to fall; when a person consents to approach God as Father, enter partnership with Him, become a member of the royal family with heaven as home in unbreakable tie to the redeemed, and place himself under pledge to God, God pledges His irrevocable word to grant that admission, with holy angels watching, provided the conditions are complied with.

Life Application

The verse is the true eternal life insurance policy, the very best and only safe insurance from God's company in the heavenly courts, in contrast to a Freemason policy or worldly dependence. It insures guardianship in this present world and immortal life in the world to come, a life measuring with the life of God, not a policy whose value another receives only after death. It is secured now by diligence in adding grace to grace and making calling and election sure so as never to fall, is efficacious through endless eternity, and may be claimed by cooperating with God rather than by merely talking the truth. Everyone may have it by investing in that company, by reading, pledging, praying and doing day by day, for none who remain true to right principles will be disappointed by the Power that issues these papers.

Securing it calls for working from inward to outward as the Spirit works, with full consecration to God without divided service. It requires keeping the sacred and the common separate, regaining clear spiritual eyesight to discern between them, and no longer exalting and cherishing common fire. It is gained by united daily effort to help one another gain perfection of character, ceasing all criticism and faultfinding of others, criticizing self, ceasing distrust of brethren, putting away bitterness, fretting and murmuring, hating the things of the world once loved, and advancing onward and still onward toward perfection. It means crucifying self, cutting out selfishness, overcoming intemperate habits and evil dispositions, escaping lust's corruption, standing true to principle as the needle to the pole, each standing in lot and place, with the graces hung in the mind and acted upon.

In daily life this means bringing self into order before God, telling Jesus little trials and great perplexities and believing He will be helper, strength and sympathizing Friend, carrying every trial to Him and constantly looking to Jesus as Author and Finisher. It means bringing the whole family before God morning and evening, recognizing dependence upon Him and asking His guidance, following on to know the Lord degree after degree and strength after strength, and eating His flesh and drinking His blood. It is to be acted on every day in home and family life with no scolding or fretting, adding grace in the home, keeping the body in health, fleeing trashy novels and story magazines for the Word, and standing free from entangling ties such as secret orders and worldly dependence. Sanitarium workers and all workers are thus required to stand on higher ground, take hold of the faith of Christ, daily bring the sanctification imparted by the Spirit into life, words and actions, cultivate kindness and tenderness of heart, and encourage the Spirit's presence so angels can connect with them and their experience makes lasting impressions for good on unbelievers.

It applies to parents who must not neglect restraint and guidance of children in training them in Christ, and to believers striving for immortality. It applies to youth and students as the keynote of victory for successful life work and righteous influence wherever they are, as living witnesses rooted and grounded in truth amid contamination, established in present truth, making Christ the all in all, knowing personal weakness, going to God for strength, standing nobly against surrounding evil, and not giving the mind almost wholly to study lest all that enriches life is lost. It applies to teachers and students made to aim in obtaining an education at becoming humble, devoted Christians who use probationary time to get rid of selfishness, pride, egotism and seeking the highest place, transfer to the higher grade, the school of heaven, and lead others in the way of salvation. It applies to soldiers of the cross warring the grand warfare under Christ the Captain of salvation until victory is gained, proving Christ has not died in vain, and to all in using talents, widening usefulness, helping others to the safe platform of Bible truth and to gain perfection, turning many to righteousness, and communicating light in the closing ripening world.

The promise gives courage, hope and faith to press steadily forward in continual advancement with no standstill, learning daily in the school of Christ until complete, because Jesus will not leave but will give needed help. It calls for serving God alone under the baptismal pledge to live under the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, watching and praying for power to remain on the right path, and doing thorough and diligent work of repentance. It brings power to resist the satanic antagonist with victory through Christ who bruises the serpent's head, to live in love and unity bringing others to salvation, and to grow toward perfection of character while helping one another advance. It is the glorious hope set before those who advance by faith through steady growth in grace and knowledge of the truth, the lively hope of the incorruptible inheritance reserved in heaven, realized when the books are opened and at meeting Christ at His return.
