Jesus Transfigured with Moses, Elijah and Three Disciplesby emmanuel_higgins

2 Peter 1:17

For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

On the holy mount of transfiguration Jesus received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the excellent glory declaring Him the beloved Son in whom the Father delights. That excellent glory is heaven itself, the glory of God shining from Omnipotence, the same glory that passed before Moses and shone upon his face. Peter and those with him saw His transfigured majesty with their eyes and heard that voice with their ears, so their witness to His power and coming was eyewitness certainty and not cleverly invented fable. That witnessed glory gave sure evidence of His divinity as the promised Messiah to sustain faith through His humiliation and crucifixion and to attest after His resurrection that He is the Son of God. Together with that eyewitness testimony stands the more sure word of prophecy to be heeded as a light in darkness until the day dawns, a word that stands fast forever because holy men spoke as moved by the Holy Ghost and not by human will.

Voice and Its Setting

The voice came from the excellent glory, which is heaven itself and the glory of God reflected from Omnipotence, the same glory and goodness that passed before Moses and shone reflected on his face so brightly that the people could not look at him. Its setting is the holy mount, the mount of transfiguration, where Jesus was transfigured by the glory of God and talked with messengers of heaven while Peter and those with him were with him on the mount. There Peter and the other witnesses heard that voice from heaven themselves declaring him the beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased, and witnessed his majesty.

At the transfiguration Moses and Elijah as glorious ones from the courts of heaven paid Jesus homage, confirming his divinity and his identity as the promised Messiah. The three chosen disciples saw with their eyes and heard with their ears things beyond human comprehension, giving them sure evidence they could no longer doubt. That acknowledgment of the homeless, wandering, meek and lowly Man of sorrows as God's Son was to sustain them through his humiliation and crucifixion, so that after his resurrection their witness to what they had seen and heard would attest that he was the Son of God. The transfiguration took place only a short time before he came down from the mount to meet the demon-possessed child and restore him to his father freed from demonic power, showing in brief space the extremes of glory above and grief and Satan's work below in the same mighty Redeemer glorified before his disciples and then stooping to lift the victim.

The same voice and manifestation of excellent glory is also presented as proclaiming Christ to be the Son of the Eternal at the Jordan at his baptism, when the opening heavens and descent of heavenly glory attested his divine character. This affirmation came as his mission was about to begin, before he withdrew to the wilderness to face temptation. At the Jordan the declaration marked Jesus as the one Satan had come to oppose and would personally confront in his effort to overthrow Christ's kingdom. His victory over temptation would prepare him to help those struggling against temptation and human weakness. The Father's approval of Christ at his baptism was assurance that God accepted the fallen race through Christ their representative and granted humanity a second trial, renewing communication between God and humanity broken by Adam's fall. Though sinless, Christ became sin for the race so his righteousness could be credited to humanity, and through his perfect character and merits humanity was raised in moral value and finite people were joined to the Infinite to bridge the gulf made by sin.

Eyewitness Proof Not Fable

Peter was an eyewitness of the majesty of Jesus Christ in making known His power and coming, and had not followed cunningly devised fables. On the holy mount he heard God the Father give Jesus honour and glory by a voice from the excellent glory in heaven declaring Jesus to be the beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased. That message of the power and coming of Christ rests on eyewitness testimony of His majesty, giving a more sure word of prophecy to take heed to as a light shining in a dark place until the day dawn and the day star arise in hearts. Pressing forward on that plain testimony of truth when great difficulties arise preserves health and prepares for meeting every conceivable form of Satan's working.

God the Father gave Jesus honor and glory when the voice from heaven declared Him the beloved Son in whom the Father was well pleased, and Peter and those with him heard that voice and witnessed His majesty when with Him in the holy mount. This eyewitness experience proves that making known the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is not following cleverly invented stories but testimony of what was seen and heard. It stands together with the more sure word of prophecy to be heeded as a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns. The testimony is given to stir believers to remembrance, to repeat the evidences of the Word, to walk carefully at every step so as to give no offence to Jesus Christ who bought them with the price of His own blood, and to fit for immortality and the glory to be revealed at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The voice from the excellent glory publicly honored Jesus and confirmed His divinity and His identity as the promised Messiah. Together with the homage paid to Jesus by Moses and Elijah as glorious ones from the courts of heaven, it gave the three chosen disciples sure evidence they could no longer doubt. They saw with their eyes and heard with their ears things beyond human comprehension. The acknowledgment of the homeless, wandering, meek and lowly Man of sorrows as God's Son strengthened them to endure His coming humiliation and crucifixion, and after His resurrection their witness to what they had seen and heard would attest that He was the Son of God.

That eyewitness testimony is an example of the certainty with which the truth of God may be proclaimed. It gives assurance that Christ is the Saviour and that God's people can speak with confidence about the coming morning and night.

Father Honors the Son

The verse means that Jesus received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the excellent glory saying He is the beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased. This happened on the holy mountain, where Peter and those with Him heard that voice from heaven themselves while with Jesus and witnessed His majesty as eyewitnesses. Their testimony proves that making known the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is not following cunningly devised fables but rests on what was seen and heard. That eyewitness experience stands together with the more sure word of prophecy to be heeded as a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns. The testimony is given to stir believers to remembrance, to repeat the evidences of the Word, to walk carefully at every step so as to give no offence to Jesus who bought them with His own blood, and to fit for immortality and the glory to be revealed at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

The Father's public declaration honored Jesus and confirmed His divinity and His identity as the promised Messiah. This testimony, together with the homage paid to Jesus by Moses and Elijah as glorious ones from the courts of heaven, gave the three chosen disciples sure evidence they could no longer doubt. They saw with their eyes and heard with their ears things beyond human comprehension. The acknowledgment of the homeless, wandering, meek and lowly Man of sorrows as God's Son was to sustain and strengthen them through His coming humiliation and crucifixion, so that after His resurrection their witness to what they had seen and heard would attest that He was the Son of God.

Christ bore His commission from the Excellent Glory, and His divine authority was present even while He lived in human form. His person and glory cannot be truly represented by human art. That excellent glory of Christ is something people can see and share in through Christ. The phrase excellent glory is also associated with the glory prepared as the reward of the faithful Christian.

Sure Prophetic Word

Peter's eyewitness experience on the holy mount stands together with the more sure word of prophecy to be heeded as a light shining in a dark place until the day dawns and the day star arises in the heart. Jesus received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to Him from the excellent glory declaring Him the beloved Son in whom the Father is well pleased. Peter was with Him in the holy mount and heard that voice from heaven himself as an eyewitness of His majesty, with those who were with him, proving that making known the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is not following cunningly devised fables. That eyewitness testimony grounds the more sure word of prophecy to be heeded as a light in a dark place.

The Word of God is sure and stands fast forever as a light shining in a dark place to be heeded until the day dawns and the day star arises in the heart, standing against every deception and attempt of so-called higher critics to invalidate it. No prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation nor came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as moved by the Holy Ghost. God who is light with no darkness at all has spoken His final decision under whose blood-stained banner of Prince Emmanuel the saved must stand.

As part of the passage about Christ and the sure word of prophecy, the honour given to Christ supports that the third angel's message is not based on fables but on the prophetic word of God. The evidence for this message has increased, and believers live in the full light of Bible truth. Pressing forward on this sure word when great difficulties arise encourages pressing forward, preserves health, and prepares people to meet every conceivable form of Satan's working by plain testimony of truth.

Chapter Call to Godliness

The first chapter in which the verse stands is full of instruction that strikes the keynote of victory, presents Christ as the only hope and sole dependence, and is to be heeded with most earnest effort, studied abundantly, read and practiced day by day, and read as an uplifting testimony in the churches. It is to be studied carefully verse by verse, for it shows the right relation to God's work in sanitariums and calls for seeking the Lord and walking in all humility of mind before Him. The chapter plainly sets forth practical godliness on a definite plan of addition, continually adding grace to grace, while God multiplies grace and peace to the faithful. God elects those who grow through this plan, Christ having paid the price for every person so that all may receive Him and become God's children.

Following the principles of the chapter makes believers divine partakers of Jesus Christ and of the divine nature, so that even the very simplest can take hold through knowing Jesus who gave His life to buy them. Seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness is the condition God has made, the foundation stone for building, and the very first work, enlisting heart, mind, soul and strength and affecting the entire character. That course molds character after Christ's similitude into a holy temple for the Lord and causes light to shine forth to the church and to the world, while securing eternal life through seeking the righteousness of Christ and becoming one with the Saviour. Doing the work set forth in the chapter gives the grace of Christ to work out that sum and brings Christ working on the plan of multiplication in fulfilling its requirements.

This secures day by day the everlasting life insurance policy Christ gave His life so every soul could secure through grace, secured through obedience to God's law and giving the entire self to Christ. Carried out from day to day in practice it makes victors at last and leads those who gain it to help others to the safe platform of Bible truth. The verse holds an immortal promise tied to that plan of addition for following on to know the Lord, showing believers are not left in ignorance but have the Word of the living God to lay hold on as their own for heaven and eternal life and to present to bring souls into the truth. Those who practice the qualities described earlier in the chapter will not fall.

Its truths, when they fill heart and mind, give comfort and encouragement to all who have obtained like precious faith and give strength to resist every temptation to look on the dark side of circumstances and to talk discouragement. Made their own, they teach making Christ the all in all, going to God for strength in acknowledged weakness, and standing nobly against evil surroundings, especially by youth pursuing education amid contaminating influences and study. They call every person to come to Him with little trials and large perplexities and tell them all to Jesus, believing He will be helper and strength and sympathizing Friend because He is touched with the feeling of infirmities. The chapter calls for acting at once upon light and evidence with whole mind, heart and every capability, bringing souls to prayer and earnest entreaty for God to reveal Himself and bringing those long on decision to take their stand to keep the Sabbath. That same steady conduct includes patience and gentleness toward children, with parents holding their children by living faith to overcome and enter God's city.

Living the Vision Today

The heavenly voice on the holy mount that honored Jesus as God's beloved Son in whom He is well pleased confirms His majesty, and that same voice from heaven can come to people who are striving to overcome sin. By faith believers can stand with Christ on that holy mount and bear testimony to His majesty. Beholding Him there as their living Saviour strengthens them to follow His pattern of obedience, purity and self-sacrifice. That beholding also prepares them to follow Him in the future life.

Those who have experienced God's protecting care in the path of duty, and who keep His mercy and lovingkindness as something precious never to be forgotten, become eyewitnesses of His majesty and are with Christ on the holy mount. As such eyewitnesses they exalt His holy name with quiet, unwavering trust and with only gratitude in the heart. Witnessing Christ's majesty belongs together with praising God's holy name. When Christians are made complete in the one body in Christ and through Christ are one with the Father, they give evidence that they have not followed cleverly invented stories but the sure word of prophecy. Then by their words and actions all take knowledge that they have been with Jesus and learned of Him, as a holy, happy people who are objects of Christ's divine love.

The testimony of eyewitnesses to His majesty on the holy mount proves that making known the power and coming of the Lord Jesus Christ is not following cunningly devised fables. It is given to stir believers to remembrance and to repeat the evidences of the Word without taking offense at caution. It calls them to walk carefully at every step so as to give no offense to Jesus Christ who bought them with the price of His own blood. In this way it fits them for immortality and for the glory to be revealed at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
