2 Peter 1:3

According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:

His divine power has already given everything needed for life and godliness, and it is received through knowing Him who has called to glory and virtue. That knowledge is living and personal, gained by doing His word and beholding Christ, and it is the source of spiritual life and power by which grace and peace are multiplied. With it are given exceeding great and precious promises by which believers share in the divine nature, escape the corruption that is in the world through lust, and receive moral power to obey and perfect character. Believers are to diligently add to faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge temperance, to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness charity, while God combines His power with their effort so they are more than conquerors. Giving such diligence makes calling and election sure, keeps from falling into barrenness and forgetfulness, and opens an abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom on condition of obedience with the whole heart.

Complete Divine Provision

According as His divine power has given all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who has called to glory and virtue. The divine power that gives is Christ's and God's, already supplying everything needed for spiritual life, for a life of faith and godliness, and for living godly lives. The giving comes through knowing God and Jesus Christ who calls to glory and virtue, and through that knowledge and calling believers receive what enables godliness, striving toward immortality, growth in Christian character, escape from worldly corruption, growth in Christian qualities, and entrance into Christ's everlasting kingdom.

The gift is already given and complete, with nothing needed for life, godliness, and eternal life withheld from those who walk in obedience. All things means every facility provided and every endowment of ability for discharging duty given, an unlimited supply standing as an open door no one can shut, received as spiritual strength that can continue to grow. This complete provision is the believer's true eternal life-insurance policy for making calling and election sure now while the Saviour is at hand and not afar off, given instead of a Freemason life insurance policy to those who keep adding grace to grace with the promise of eternal life. Grace and peace and mercy are multiplied in proportion as believers advance in knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ and His Word, growing daily in grace and in knowledge of the truth and adding grace to grace, and perfecting Christian character requires earnest work as laborers together with God, cooperating with God and laying hold on the abundant divine strength provided, because evil influences are so prevalent that perfection cannot be attained in human strength and the positive assurance promised comes by working as the Holy Spirit works from inward to outward in full consecration without mingling the common with the sacred.

The provision is made available to every person and to every human being, with the call to glory and virtue coming to everyone and to be obeyed by acting in harmony with the knowledge received and by working out salvation with fear and trembling. That knowledge must be personal, individual, and experiential, worth more than silver or gold or precious stones, because no one can depend on another person's experience or practice for salvation but each must become acquainted with Christ in order to properly represent Him and to escape the temptations, snares, deceptions, misrepresentations, false theories, and kingdom of Satan to allure the world. Because everything needed has been provided amply, those who are lost are left without excuse, with no excuse for spiritual weakness or poverty, nor for hasty temper, misshapen character, selfishness, envy, jealousy, or any impurity of soul, body, or spirit, and whether people receive its benefits depends on whether they believe God's word and act upon the light and evidence received with the service of the whole mind and heart and every capability. Human beings have no strength of themselves and cannot take one step toward God unless His grace works upon the heart and draws them, yet Christ's holy life in human nature shows that perfection of Christian character in this world is possible by cooperating with divinity, as God's great promises enable sharing in the divine nature and escaping the world's corruption while diligent growth in faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love leads to Christian maturity.

The giver is divine power itself, the source of all power, identified as the great Chief Physician. Because God spared not His own Son but freely delivered Him up for all, He gives all heaven with Christ and freely bestows the facilities of heaven on His workers, having sent His only Son to reach perishing people. Christ gave His life so every soul can secure eternal life, and His divine power has given all grace needed for life and godliness, secured day by day on the plan of addition by reading and practicing practical godliness and adding grace to grace in daily obedience to the law of God, with Christ working for those who work out that addition on the plan of multiplication, multiplying grace to fulfill what is required, making them victors at last and granting the everlasting life insurance policy. This provision for a life shaped by God's character is identified with Christ's righteousness, the garment needed for godliness, which Christians are to study and put into practice, for God freely gives rich gifts through His glory and virtue and intends every soul to reveal His nature to the world.

Knowledge and Divine Calling

Everything needed for life and godliness is already supplied by divine power, and it is received through knowing the One who has called to glory and virtue. That knowledge means knowing God, and how God relates to Christ, and how Christ relates to God, and it means much, opening communion with God and being life eternal to all who respond to it. It is not merely intellectual but experiential and individual, meaning knowing the Lord by doing His Word, and it grows through obedience to the commandments, earnest effort to learn from Christ, searching the Scriptures, contemplating Christ and His righteousness, and learning daily lessons in His school. Nothing is withheld from this provision, so there is no excuse for spiritual weakness or poverty, yet whether its benefits are received depends on believing God's word, using all the power of the mind to understand it intelligently, and meeting its conditions. In union with Christ those who thus know Him are drawn away from frivolous and corrupting worldly influences into a life that glorifies God, leaving no room for self-righteousness or glorifying of self, escaping the world's corruption and becoming partakers of the divine nature through the exceeding great and precious promises, with moral power given so that all can obey God's commandments and live.

That knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ is the source of all spiritual power, and all spiritual life is from Christ, requiring faith in constant exercise. It inspires faith in Him as the only channel to convey heaven's blessing to the soul, elevating, ennobling and refining the soul and bringing it up to the high attainments of glory and virtue. Through that knowledge grace and peace are multiplied, increasing as believers grow in it and advance stage by stage without standing still, for God works on the plan of multiplication while believers work on the plan of addition by adding the graces of the Holy Spirit. The gift thus lays open all heaven with every spiritual blessing and with the treasures of wisdom hid in Christ, so that the whole structure of human character is rebuilt and created anew, transformed after the likeness of Christ and the divine similitude, with lost humanity recovered, sin pardoned, and sinners made co-workers with God. This assurance of divine help belongs to the Christian who complies with the conditions, calling for obedience to all of God's commandments, a life of progression and constant advancement, and diligent cultivation of the Christian graces in daily life until they abound and make fruitful in knowing Christ, with eternal life as the promised outcome.

To know Him is to know the perfection of the divine character manifested in Jesus, and by beholding His purity and holiness believers are strengthened by the Holy Spirit to become like God in character and to share in the divine nature. This beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord changes the beholder into the same image from glory to glory by the Spirit of the Lord, broadening the mind, imparting spiritual excellence, and giving the character the comeliness and perfection seen in the character of Christ. That experience is wholly sufficient to place the believer in right relation to God, by relying upon God, believing His Word, working His works through laying hold of the divinity of Christ, and cooperating with the truth by faith while allowing Christ to shape the whole being. Laying hold of the possibilities in Christ gives a hope strong enough to rely wholly upon God's promises and makes believers sons and daughters of God and partakers of the divine nature, a possibility worth more than all the riches of the world. Knowing God as He reveals Himself in this true knowledge enables people to work with Him, become like Him, reveal His character to the world, show Christ's character in good works through faith working by love and purifying the soul, and faithfully studying Christ's words and methods of labor teaches how to present truth so as to yield definite and lasting results for good.

The call to glory and virtue comes to every person and must be obeyed and understood, and God's gracious purpose is fulfilled in those who give themselves to Him without reserve. It summons believers to rise to a more glorious position than they have held before, catching the rays of divine light from Christ and by beholding Him being changed into His likeness, until petty trials sink into insignificance and life is lifted to an elevated plane. The glory named is the glory to be revealed of which Peter speaks as a witness of Christ's sufferings, and faithful ministers may share in it by caring for God's flock with willing, humble service. Answering the call means refusing to serve Satan by talking doubt and unbelief, refusing sin, self-indulgence, pride in dress, conflicts evaded and hindrances retained, and instead talking of Christ and His matchless love, allowing Jesus to remove hindrances to Christian character, meeting trials in duty, self-denial and sacrifice, allowing God to cooperate, and imparting to others what He has imparted, for Christ set aside His royal glory, took humanity, gave His life for the world, and His character is what He came to give.

Sharing the Divine Nature

According as divine power has given everything needed for life and godliness, received through knowing God and Jesus Christ who calls to glory and virtue, that provision opens into exceeding great and precious promises by which believers become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world through lust. Christ humbled Himself and suffered to secure pardon for sinners and make this sharing possible, and with Him were given the treasures of heaven. God's truth by these promises sanctifies, refines and ennobles the whole person, and they call for diligent cooperation, resisting temptation and adding to faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge temperance, to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness charity. Abounding in these added qualities keeps from barrenness and blindness and forgetfulness of cleansing from old sins, makes fruitful in knowing Christ, makes calling and election sure, prevents falling, and gives abundant entrance into the everlasting kingdom.

To be given all things for life and godliness is to become a partaker of the divine nature in which Christ reigns in the heart, His interests are followed out, and Satan has no room, which requires coming to one's senses and treasuring the exceeding great and precious promises, becoming familiar with them and understanding them. Although people have nothing worthy in themselves, God gave Jesus, and Christ's death brings moral power so that every person, whatever the circumstances, may partake of the divine nature. Through Jesus Christ fallen people may obey God's requirements and live, though they cannot do so by their own power, and they must diligently cooperate with God and lay hold of the divine nature. Christ has paid the price for every person so that no one need be lost and all have been redeemed, and those who receive Christ as personal Saviour are given power to become God's children and may share in the divine nature, escaping the world's corruption. Belief in Christ as a personal Saviour brings every grace and spiritual gift needed to perfect Christian character, enabling a transformed person to live in obedience and service, reflect Christ's mind, and resist being shaped by the world, while humanity and divinity united enable believers to overcome as He overcame and to grow in godly character by practicing His lessons.

God has pledged His word to combine His divine power with human effort so that believers may overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and where divinity and humanity cooperate fallen man is more than conqueror. The promises are full and broad and deep to encourage faith, and while Satan is playing the game of life for the souls of men they give precious encouragement to everyone who seeks to do God's will, calling each one to take hold of God's strength to make peace with Him. This provision makes eternal happiness possible by bringing human capabilities and powers into obedience to God under the control of divinity. Christ in His earthly life is the representative of what humanity can become through the privileges and opportunities granted in Him, refusing to weaken divine power by yielding to temptation though tempted in proportion to His elevation of mind.

Growth in Grace

The verse opens the plan of addition and the plan of multiplication working together, divine power having already given all things needed for life and godliness and still working to multiply grace and peace while believers work by constant diligence through the grace of Christ. The work on the human side is diligent adding to faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge temperance, to temperance patience, to patience godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, to brotherly kindness charity, all the graces added together and manifest at once in the Christian character. This is Peter's ladder of eight rounds, to be entered at the lowest round and climbed step by step to the top, and the ladder is Christ Himself connecting earth with heaven, so that salvation comes by looking to Him, clinging to Him, and mounting until He is made wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. The faith required is a faith that works by love and purifies the soul, and there is no graduation in Christ's school, for to have no interest in adding grace to grace and growing fruitful in knowing Christ is to miss a great opportunity. Christ laid aside royal robe and kingly crown and came as a little child taking the liabilities of human nature to teach how to do this work, perfect as workman and in character at the carpenter's bench, refusing to be defective even in handling tools, carrying cheerfulness and tact into labor, singing psalms and keeping thought for heaven, showing that believers can likewise learn duty, do it faithfully, and keep gaining.

When these things are in believers and abound they keep from barrenness and unfruitfulness, from blindness and forgetfulness of cleansing from old sins, and make fruitful in knowing Christ. That fruitfulness is conditional and must be cultivated daily without standing still, by putting oneself into the channel to follow on to know the Lord, searching the Scriptures and carrying them out in daily life, with prayer, watchfulness, and service to God. It is the practice of the Word that gives assurance, makes doubly sure the right to enter through the gates into the city, confirms religious experience in present truth, and gives assurance of walking securely in the knowledge of Christ without falling. Knowing and studying Christ gives spiritual strength to follow Him, and as believers diligently add the Christian graces God multiplies grace and the Holy Spirit's influence to strengthen them to overcome temptation and to lead to eternal life.

Because divine power supplies everything through knowing Him who calls to glory and virtue, perfection of Christian character in this world is possible through cooperation of humanity with divinity. People come to Christ needy, helpless, and dependent, and He who died for this purpose and took humanity to uplift humanity binds them by His love to the throne of God and gives power to overcome as He overcame. His human life of constant resistance to evil proves the standard can be reached, so that weak sinful mortals may attain glory and virtue, gain complete victory, and become complete in the Beloved. That attaining comes by learning daily lessons in His school, becoming conformed to the divine image, manifesting excellency of character, adding grace to grace, climbing round by round heavenward, practicing His lessons, and being sanctified soul, body, and spirit while learning His meekness and lowliness.

Sanctification in this provision is therefore progressive and practical, a continuing growth in grace and character rather than a work completed in a moment by flights of feeling. It advances by progress in well-doing, by willing obedience and continued effort in adding grace to grace, by walking humbly with God without a questioning frame of mind, taking no backward steps but following on to know the Lord and taking every advance step with rejoicing. The requirements are essential and salvation hinges on obedience to them, calling students and all believers to use privileges and opportunities to increase in knowledge and grace and perfection of character. The change from unholiness to holiness is God's continuing work, met by submitting to the Spirit, cultivating right habits, persevering against faults, seeking help humbly in prayer, and honoring God in all conduct down to eating and drinking as affecting mind and temper, while Christ's righteousness makes true obedience acceptable and God multiplies grace and peace and supplies what is needed in the struggle against evil.

Assurance and Eternal Kingdom

The chapter containing the verse is the true life-insurance policy, endorsed by the Lord God who created man, covering all that belongs to life and godliness as a sure basis for hope. Its positive assurance lies especially in verses 8-11, where diligence in the things listed makes calling and election sure, so that the believer shall never fall and an entrance shall be ministered abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. That assurance is secured by receiving and applying the instruction of the chapter through a living faith that relies on Christ's divine power to overcome. It is had by cooperating with the Holy Spirit in a work that proceeds from inward change to outward life, with full consecration to God and without divided service, without mingling the sacred with the common, without cherishing common fire. When any soul approaches God as Father and consents to place himself under pledge to Him, heaven becomes home and he becomes a member of the royal family, a child of the heavenly King, linked with the family of the redeemed by a tie that cannot be broken, for the Lord enters into vital relation with the one who enters into partnership with Him and pledges His word in return.

Salvation hinges on obedience to the requirements of the passage, for the promise is conditional and works by conditions. Nothing is withheld from those who walk in obedience to the promise, and they receive spiritual strength that can continue to grow, since knowledge of God and Jesus is the source of spiritual power that inspires faith, conveys heaven's blessing, and elevates and refines the soul. The great and precious promises enable believers to share in the divine nature and escape the corruption of the world, assuring Christians of divine help when they meet its conditions. Acting upon the light and evidence received with the service of the whole mind and heart and every capability is therefore required, and when obeyed it moves souls to come forward for prayer for God to reveal Himself, to take a decided stand to keep the Sabbath, and brings an advance movement and decided victory.

The provision is the foundation for growth in godly character and progress toward the everlasting kingdom, supplying every opportunity and all that is needed to grow in grace, knowledge, and faith and to prepare for eternal life. What is given through knowing Him who calls to glory and virtue must be used in a daily life of continued growth and determined effort to know the Lord, grasping His strength in the time of testing and following His example and teachings as necessary preparation for heaven. Believers are to keep adding godly qualities to their character, and by practicing and studying the qualities taught in the chapter they develop a godly character in this life that prepares for immortal life and for fellowship with the heavenly family and entrance into God's kingdom.

Christ's Example and Victory

His divine power has given everything needed for life and godliness through knowing Him who called to glory and virtue, and this makes possible adding grace to grace through faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity so as to be fruitful in knowing Christ. To teach how to accomplish this work He laid off His royal robe and kingly crown and came as a little child taking the liabilities of human nature. By His life as child and youth at the carpenter bench He refused to be defective even in handling tools, was perfect as a workman and in character, carried cheerfulness and tact into labor, sang psalms and kept time and thought for heaven, and was faithful in all He did, showing that believers can likewise learn lessons, understand duty, do it faithfully, and keep gaining. He made an infinite sacrifice in taking human nature to teach the way of life and salvation and to show that humanity could withstand Satan's temptations and live in keeping with God's standard of righteousness. Though tempted as human beings are He remained without sin and gained the victory over Satan, and His human life of constant resistance to evil proves that through cooperation with God fallen people can attain perfection of character in this life and gain complete victory, which human strength alone cannot achieve.

He is the only hope and sole dependence, the source of strength and help in every trial and perplexity. Every trial and perplexity is to be brought to Him in faith, trusting Him as Helper, Strength, Leader, Captain, sympathizing Friend and divine Teacher. Of themselves people have no power to keep in right paths for one moment, and no other human being can be trusted to keep them there, so Christ the risen Saviour is the only dependence. Because God gave Christ to die He will freely give with Him everything needed for life and godliness, the gift coming as the Spirit reaches the conscience so the heart stained with selfishness is cleansed by the blood of Christ, and the cleansed heart must be kept clean by obedience to Christ. Knowing Him and receiving from Him what enables life and godliness equips even ministers to serve successfully, for Christ formed within is the hope and strength of the life.

His death on Calvary bought the covenant promise for every person and for their children, bearing the death penalty of transgression as substitute and surety, with the fruit of His sufferings and death shown in His resurrection, so that no one need be lost and all have been redeemed. All who will may come under that covenant promise in God's appointed way, and those who receive Christ as personal Saviour are given power to become God's children, to share in the divine nature and escape the world's corruption, being justified, sanctified, made white and tried unto godliness and eternal life. The gift belongs to those who have obtained like precious faith with the early Christians, received not through personal righteousness but through the righteousness of God and Jesus Christ, bringing multiplied grace and peace through knowing God and Jesus. That knowledge is to be learned and taught in the home, including to children, through Scripture. The promised power is received by following His example in the wilderness, standing firm on every word of God, refusing to dally with temptation or argue with the devil, but knowing individually that one is right in the warfare and holding the affirmative position before God, and then His victory becomes the believer's own experience. This calls for strict attention to formation of character by daily laying hold by faith upon the Invisible One and abiding in Jesus, accepting His invitation to the weary with lowliness of heart and taking His yoke for rest rather than unloading burdens on others, so that Christ formed within appears in every word and deed. The hand is to be placed in God's hand and Jesus as Leader, General and Redeemer looked to and followed as His purchased possession, rather than contemplating self or fretting into gloom because human beings seem not to appreciate the work, for God is assurance, sufficiency and exceeding great reward.

Daily Christian Living

The chapter is to be studied more abundantly and its precepts practiced, for it teaches growth in godly character through adding temperance and patience, applied even to daily habits of eating and drinking that affect mind and temper so that all conduct honors God. It is to be carried into religious experience by walking humbly with God without questioning, living on the plan of addition by adding grace to grace, taking no backward steps but following on to know the Lord with rejoicing at every advance. Every learner has the privilege of daily advancement in increasing knowledge of God and Christ, making the Bible the textbook, needing ever-increasing capacity in its study, learning and practicing the lessons of Christ, storing treasures of Bible knowledge to impart to others, while as man works on addition God works for him on multiplication. It strikes the keynote of victory for youth amid contaminating influences, teaching that victory and all that enriches life come from knowing personal weakness, going to God for strength, and making Christ the all in all even while studying rather than giving the mind almost wholly to study without Christ. It sets forth the experiences that fit men and women to become efficient workers for God, and those offering themselves for gospel work are to study it, with those not adapted to that line directed to work they can do and encouraged to study it.

Divine power has provided all things needed for life and godliness through knowing Christ who calls to glory and virtue, and this truth instructs educational work requiring those who establish schools to surround children with circumstances most favorable for forming character strong enough to withstand the evils of the world. That provision comes freely through knowing Him and equips believers to live faithfully and serve Him, enabling them as they add the graces of the surrounding verses to their character to have God multiply the work in them. Belonging to a life of Christian growth in which God supplies grace and peace while believers build character by adding grace to grace, its teaching applies to young people preparing for useful service through diligent effort, strong minds and bodies, and thoughts made pure through sanctification, virtue and holiness. Living by the principles of the chapter enlists heart, mind, soul and strength and affects the entire character, so that those who follow them while seeking Christ's righteousness become one with the Saviour and partakers of the divine nature. Their character is molded after Christ's likeness and grows into a holy temple for the Lord, through whom light shines to the church and to the world.

The provision is precious resources to be grasped and understood so believers can help people in sin by convicting them of sin and praying with them, equipping for practical service reflected in training workers through schools connected with sanitariums. Christ is the source of strength and grace needed for godly service, and knowing Him and receiving from Him what enables life and godliness equips a minister to serve successfully, for Christ formed within is the hope and strength of the life. The verse applies to wholehearted consecration and trust in the Lord, who guides in the work that will glorify His name. This provision includes wisdom to act in harmony with God's will and to plan for advancement of His work in saving souls.

Practical godliness is a heart in harmony with God's moral standard of righteousness rather than a mere parrot-like claim to be saved while at enmity with His law. The calling requires the purest education in morality and religion and constant reaching for Christian attainments, manifest in all truly connected with Jesus as truthful words, temperance in all things, and appetites and passions kept under control by belief and practice of the truth, while those indulging sinful desires are unworthy of the name Christian. God's power is needed to overcome evil and live a genuine Christian life, with knowing Christ and growing in that knowledge part of the spiritual growth the chapter calls for, involving adding to faith and living out Bible requirements with God's strength. Those who take the name of Christian are to honor it by having the mind thoroughly cultivated and keeping open every aspiration and enterprise that pure religion sanctions, and those obeying will be richly blessed. Through faith believers receive God's blessings so that every defect of character can be supplied, every defilement cleansed, every fault corrected and every virtue developed, making obedience to the truth peaceful and joyful.

The rich provision through the righteousness of God and Jesus Christ, multiplying grace and peace through knowledge, makes God the assurance, sufficiency and exceeding great reward, and is reason to trust, praise God, look to Him and live, and grow in knowledge by beholding Him who is Truth. There is therefore no cause to complain, fret, worry into gloom, distrust brethren, or feel watched as unworthy, but to put away every phase of sin, overcome suspicion, and be all light in the Lord. When its truths fill heart and mind they give comfort and encouragement to all who have obtained like precious faith, with strength to resist every temptation to look on the dark side and talk discouragement. When the good Word of life is received it brings decisive change in the heart, and these gifts are motive for applying God's promises personally and building godly character by claiming them. Every man is called to bring himself into order and walk carefully before God to honor, fear and glorify His holy name, doing decided and earnest work because the world is fast ripening for the close of its history, so that those truly serving Jesus will be a holy, sanctified people communicating light of truth to all around.
