2 Peter 3:2
That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
The call is to stir up pure minds by way of remembrance, by staying mindful of the words spoken beforehand by the holy prophets and of the commandment of the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. This remembrance is meant to stir and strengthen the mind. Remembering these teachings in this way helps keep the mind under God's control.
Being mindful means understanding the Word of the Lord and following on to know Him day by day, refusing to belong to the willingly ignorant class. The verse belongs to a chapter full of warnings and counsel that Christ's followers need to heed. That chapter warns that troublemakers in the early church have counterparts today who must be guarded against.
The verse directs attention to knowing first that in the last days scoffers walking after their own lusts will come, questioning the promise of His coming on the ground that since the fathers fell asleep all things continue as they were from the beginning of creation. Remembering prophecy guards against that unbelief by holding fast that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, when the heavens pass away with great noise and the elements melt with fervent heat and the earth and its works are burned. Believers therefore ought to live in all holy conduct and godliness while looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God.
The verse calls believers to be mindful of Bible truth as alone worth living for, holding fast what was received and refusing to let the pleasing sophistry of human wisdom diminish God and His glory. It leads them to recognize the present state of the world with its abominations and crimes as fulfillment of its prophecies concerning the wickedness that would prevail during the last days. That recognition should lead to lives of humility and prayer.
