2 Samuel 1:13

And David said unto the young man that told him, Whence art thou? And he answered, I am the son of a stranger, an Amalekite.

David put the question to the young man who brought him the report, asking where he was from, and learned that he was the son of a stranger, an Amalekite, a foreigner. That question and answer belong to the larger account of David receiving the news that Saul and Jonathan were dead. For the part the messenger had taken in Saul's death, David ordered him to be slain. David's dealing with the Amalekite who reported that he had killed Saul throws light on David's character. The news brought David no feigned but unfeigned grief, and out of that grief came his song in memory of Saul and Jonathan.
