2 Samuel 10:8

And the children of Ammon came out, and put the battle in array at the entering in of the gate: and the Syrians of Zoba, and of Rehob, and Ish-tob, and Maacah, were by themselves in the field.

The children of Ammon came out from their cities and drew up for battle at the entrance of the gate. The Syrians of Zoba and Rehob and Ish-tob and Maacah, together with Mesopotamia and Syria-maachah, stood apart by themselves in the open field, having been hired for a thousand talents of silver with thirty-two thousand chariots and horsemen. Together they formed a vast and formidable coalition stretching between the Euphrates and the Mediterranean, so that the north and east of Canaan were encircled with armed foes banded together to crush Israel.

The alliance was wholly unprovoked by David, springing from jealousy of his increasing power and from the Ammonites' hatred of the true God and bitter enmity toward Israel. That enmity broke into the open when the Ammonites misconstrued David's kindly message of sympathy to Hanun, scorned his ambassadors in violation of the sacred office of ambassador, made themselves odious to him, and then made ready for war in expectation of sure retaliation. This array for battle grew into the greatest wars and victories of David's reign and brought the most extensive additions to his power.
