The king was told that Absalom had killed all of his sons, and in grief he tore his garments and lay prostrate on the earth. All his servants standing by him also tore their clothes and remained with him in mourning. That report proved false when the king's sons themselves returned alive. Their coming made clear that Amnon alone had been slain, and David and his servants then wept with great bitterness.
