The verse stands within Joab's sustained effort to restore Absalom to David's favor. Joab intervened not once but twice to secure reconciliation between father and son. That repeated mediation placed Absalom under a special obligation of trust to both David and Joab. Absalom afterward betrayed that trust when he turned against the father to whom he had been restored.
