2 Samuel 14:7

And, behold, the whole family is risen against thine handmaid, and they said, Deliver him that smote his brother, that we may kill him, for the life of his brother whom he slew; and we will destroy the heir also: and so they shall quench my coal which is left, and shall not leave to my husband neither name nor remainder upon the earth.

The widow reported that her whole family had risen against her as a servant seeking help, insisting that the surviving son who had struck down his brother be delivered up to them. Their demand was that he be put to death in retribution for the life of the brother he had slain. She warned that by destroying the heir as well they would quench her coal that was left. That extinguishing of her last remaining hope would leave her husband with neither name nor remainder of descendants upon the earth. Her plea moved David to promise protection for the son.

The appeal belonged to Joab's plan in which he twice secured Absalom's reconciliation with David. That intervention helped make Absalom's later rebellion possible.
