2 Samuel 15:18
And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king. And all his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men which came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.
The verse pictures David in flight from Jerusalem during the rebellion of Absalom, accompanied by his servants and by six hundred men who had followed him from Gath. Their passing on beside him and on before the king was not a parade but part of an urgent escape from the pursuing forces of his traitorous son. The fleeing company was not soldiers alone, but included men and women and little children sharing the king's exile. On this flight they were forced to cross a deep, swift-flowing stream in darkness.
