2 Samuel 16:4
Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king. Then said the king to Ziba, Behold, thine are all that pertained unto Mephibosheth. And Ziba said, I humbly beseech thee that I may find grace in thy sight, my lord, O king.
The grant to Ziba of all that had belonged to Mephibosheth took place while David was fleeing from Jerusalem in the war caused by Absalom's rebellion. That flight ended with David's victory over Absalom and his return to Jerusalem, and its circumstances provide the setting for Psalm 3. Within that larger history, stretching from the long war between the house of Saul and the house of David through 2 Samuel 20, the verse belongs to the record in 2 Samuel 16 and 17 of the events leading up to Absalom's defeat and death. That defeat and death came about three months after Absalom occupied Jerusalem, after a delay in which David numbered his adherents and organized his army while Absalom rallied the people to his standard.
The act of giving Ziba all that belonged to Mephibosheth was part of the retribution that followed David's wrong against Uriah. The events recorded across 2 Samuel 11-19 show David receiving consequences for his sin, especially within his own family, in the sad history of his later life. At the same time, the grant shows David's kindness to the house of Saul continuing during his flight, even amid the troubles brought by Absalom's rebellion.
