Shimei Curses David on the Road to Bahurimby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 16:6

And he cast stones at David, and at all the servants of king David: and all the people and all the mighty men were on his right hand and on his left.

As David fled from Absalom in humiliation, Shimei hurled stones at David and at all his servants, while all the people and the mighty men surrounded David on his right hand and on his left. He also threw dirt at David and his servants. At the same time he cursed David and accused him of being a violent and wicked man.

David acknowledged the attack and its accusations as part of the punishment God had brought upon him for his own sin. He humbly accepted the abuse and allowed that Shimei might be carrying out that punishment. He restrained his men from killing Shimei. He trusted that God might look on his affliction, lessen it, and turn Shimei's curse into a blessing.

After Absalom's death, when David returned, Shimei confessed his rebellion and David spared and forgave him, though others urged his death for cursing the Lord's anointed. Shimei's conduct reveals the spirit of Satan in triumphing over, reviling, and distressing someone who is suffering.
