2 Samuel 18:17

And they took Absalom, and cast him into a great pit in the wood, and laid a very great heap of stones upon him: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.

Absalom's lifeless body was taken and cast into a great pit in the wood, where it was covered with a very great heap of stones. The pit in the forest became his burial place, unhonored and cast aside rather than laid in a prepared tomb. That heap of stones was raised over him as a mark of lasting reproach upon his grave. It stood in stark contrast to the costly monument he had erected for himself during his lifetime to preserve his name.
