Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But howsoever, let me, I pray thee, also run after Cushi. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou hast no tidings ready? Ahimaaz the son of Zadok asked Joab a second time to be allowed to run after Cushi to David, pleading earnestly despite having no tidings ready to bear. Joab questioned why he would run when he had no message prepared, yet Ahimaaz persisted in his desire to go. He then outran the other messenger and arrived first before David with a report of victory. When David asked after Absalom, he evaded the question and did not tell the king the fate of his son.
