2 Samuel 18:29

And the king said, Is the young man Absalom safe? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, and me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.

When the king inquired after the safety of the young Absalom, it was Ahimaaz who was first put to the question. Instead of answering plainly, he turned aside from a direct reply about Absalom's fate. He declared only that he had observed a great commotion at the time of his sending but did not know what it signified. By that evasive report he kept back from David the tidings that Absalom was dead.
