2 Samuel 19:42

And all the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, Because the king is near of kin to us: wherefore then be ye angry for this matter? have we eaten at all of the king’s cost? or hath he given us any gift?

The verse belongs to the detailed history of David's reign covering his victory over Absalom's rebellion and his return to Jerusalem, with the other incidents connected with those greater events. That history is part of the retribution that followed David's wrong toward Uriah, which continued through the rest of his life and fell chiefly on his family. The family retribution included the tragedy of Amnon and Tamar and Absalom's rebellion and crimes, showing that wrongdoing brings consequences like the wrong itself and that a person reaps what he sows. In the dispute between the men of Judah and Israel in verses 41-43, their answers to one another show how an answer can display the same bad temper as the one being answered rather than exposing his folly.
