2 Samuel 2:1
And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron. And it came to pass after this, that David enquired of the LORD, saying, Shall I go up into any of the cities of Judah? And the LORD said unto him, Go up. And David said, Whither shall I go up? And he said, Unto Hebron.
After inquiring of the Lord, David obeyed the divine direction to go up to Hebron. He relocated there with his followers, bringing their families and possessions with them. At Hebron the men of Judah received him and anointed him king over Judah. He did not use force to extend his rule over the other tribes.
