Abner and Joab Face Off at Gibeon Poolby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 2:13

And Joab the son of Zeruiah, and the servants of David, went out, and met together by the pool of Gibeon: and they sat down, the one on the one side of the pool, and the other on the other side of the pool.

At Gibeon Abner came with his forces to make Ish-bosheth son of Saul king and was met there by Joab and the servants of David. The two companies sat down opposite each other, the one on the one side of the pool and the other on the other side of the pool. Hostilities were opened by twelve chosen young men from each side.

The verse belongs to the account in 2 Samuel 2-4 of the causes that led to David being made king over all Israel. It stands in a time of lingering warfare between Judah and Israel in which David always proved victorious, while Ish-bosheth had no ability to unite the fragments of the kingdom and the cause of religion was low. Behind all these political changes was God's purpose to bring David to the throne, opened by Abner's turning against Ish-bosheth, David's recovery of Michal his wife as heir of Saul, and the murders of Abner and Ish-bosheth which David openly repudiated, leaving only Jonathan's lame son. The pool of Gibeon is Joab's fountain at Gibeon and is still there, one of the fountains that once slaked the thirst of prophets, priests, and kings, from which the traveler still rejoices to drink and be refreshed.
