2 Samuel 2:25
And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill. And the children of Benjamin gathered themselves together after Abner, and became one troop, and stood on the top of an hill.
2 Samuel 2 records the internal troubles and strife that marked the establishment of David's reign, and this verse belongs to that account of conflict. It forms part of the longer narrative in 2 Samuel 2-4 that explains the causes that led to David becoming king over all Israel. It reflects the situation in which David was reigning at Hebron after Saul's death yet did not peaceably possess the kingdom, because Saul's son and his army still proposed to hold the kingdom by force. It portrays a moment in the lingering warfare between Judah and Israel in which David always proved victorious, when the children of Benjamin gathered together behind Abner against Judah and stood as one troop on a hilltop.
The way was left open for David through a series of surrounding events, beginning with Ish-bosheth's inability to unite the fragments of the kingdom. Abner defected to David after a charge of treachery, and David gained a hold on the northern people through the restoration of Michal. Although Abner and Ish-bosheth were then murdered, David openly repudiated those murders so that the way remained open for him. Behind all these political changes was God's purpose to bring David to the throne.
