2 Samuel 2:32

And they took up Asahel, and buried him in the sepulchre of his father, which was in Beth-lehem. And Joab and his men went all night, and they came to Hebron at break of day.

The burial at Bethlehem and the night march to Hebron belong to the 2 Samuel 1-4 account of the rise and establishment of David's reign and kingdom. That larger account sets forth the causes that led to his being made king over all Israel. The opening portion, 2 Samuel 1-2, falls to be read on Sunday, April 27.

Its immediate setting is internal trouble and strife during the establishment of that reign. David reigns at Hebron but does not hold the kingdom peaceably, because Saul's son and his army still try to hold the kingdom by force. Behind all those political changes stands God's providence and purpose to bring David to the throne and to build up the Israelite kingdom.
