The Wise Woman Speaks to Joab from the Wallby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 20:16

Then cried a wise woman out of the city, Hear, hear; say, I pray you, unto Joab, Come near hither, that I may speak with thee.

The cry belongs to the account of the revolt of Sheba the son of Bichri, which broke out after the revolt of Absalom had been suppressed. That uprising was occasioned by a quarrel between the men of Judah and the men of Israel, and it threatened to become very serious. It stands in the later history of David, after his great wickedness in the case of Uriah, by which he gave great occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme.

It continues David's unended troubles as judgment for his sin in the case of Uriah. That later history shows how completely the terrible denunciation of the prophet Nathan was accomplished in the judgments that came upon David. The record does not cover up or excuse David's transgression, but places it on record together with his humble confession for all future time.
