The Wise Woman Speaks to Joab from the Wallby emmanuel_higgins

2 Samuel 20:21

The matter is not so: but a man of mount Ephraim, Sheba the son of Bichri by name, hath lifted up his hand against the king, even against David: deliver him only, and I will depart from the city. And the woman said unto Joab, Behold, his head shall be thrown to thee over the wall.

2 Samuel 20:21 belongs to 2 Samuel 19 to 21 in the closing history of the reign of David, which recounts the difficulties he encountered. The wider history is the books of Samuel, whose great event is the establishment of a monarchy with Samuel, Saul, and David as the three leading characters. It begins with the aged priest Eli as priest, judge, and leader of the people, continues with Samuel born in answer to prayer taking the place of Eli, the people asking for a king, Saul being given and then deposed for proving unworthy, and David taking his place.

In its immediate setting the verse records part of the revolt of Sheba the son of Bichri, which came after the suppression of Absalom's revolt and grew out of a quarrel between the men of Judah and the men of Israel. That revolt threatened to become very serious. It was one of David's continuing troubles and one of God's judgments on him for his sin in the case of Uriah, completely fulfilling Nathan's denunciation and proving true that the sword would never depart from his house.

The detailed and faithful telling of this later history marks it as inspired and shows that God does not hide the sins of even the greatest kings. That history neither covers up nor excuses David's great wickedness that gave occasion to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme. Nathan's terrible denunciation stands on record together with the history proving its fulfillment.
